Tiers at the Rosengarten

St. Zyprian / Tiers

Your Gateway to the Dolomites

Tiers am Rosengarten is an ideal starting point to actively experience the scenic beauty of the Dolomites and the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park. St. Zyprian / Tiers – where our hotel is located at about 1,127 m above sea level – belongs to the municipality of Tiers and is in the immediate vicinity of the mountain world. High above our house, the Tschafon (1,737 m) greets you, and further back rises the Mittagskofel (2,250 m). But the most famous Dolomite giants in our vicinity are the Schlern (2,563 m) and, right on our doorstep, the Rosengarten (2,997 m). Secluded valley sections, deep forests, and to the north the Seiser Alm – Europe's largest high alpine pasture – are the natural wonders you can explore with us.

Holidays in the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park

The Schlern in the west and the Rosengarten in the southeast are the natural boundary pillars that also gave the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park its name. Covering an area of around 8,900 hectares, this magnificent area takes up a good part of the western South Tyrolean Dolomites. With its highest peak, Petz (2,563 m), and the two majestic towers Santner and Euringer, the Schlern is rightly considered one of the landmarks of South Tyrol. And when you look at the Rosengarten massif, you have another one that imprints itself on your memory. Our hotel is located in Tiers on the southern edge of the nature park. You thus have an excellent starting position for all your holiday activities. Tiers itself has been part of the nature park area since 2003.

"Enrosadira" the impressive glow of the Rosengarten

Enrosadira - a term from the Ladin language meaning "rosy glow". The Alpenglow gives the landscape a very special magic, with a mythical attraction. Experience this magic, the red glow of the Rosengarten during twilight, from the Traunwiesen meadows located directly behind our hotel, or at what is probably the most beautiful place to enjoy the evening play of colours on the Rosengarten, at the Wuhnleger. This high meadow at 1,402 m is about a 45-minute walk from St. Zyprian / Tiers and, with its idyllic pond, is a worthwhile excursion destination for a walk in itself.

The Power of Legends

As early as the end of the 19th century, the breathtaking beauty of the Dolomite region around the Rosengarten attracted numerous climbing pioneers to St. Zyprian / Tiers. Among them was our grandfather, the South Tyrolean mountain guide Franz Schroffenegger. The bizarre rock formations, the majestic mountain castles, and the magic of the alpenglow have always fascinated and captivated alpinists. No wonder, then, that many legends and myths surround the beautiful Rosengarten near Tiers, such as the story of the dwarf king Laurin and the beautiful king's daughter Similde.

The Power of Legends

The Laurin Saga

Over the centuries, it has been told that the dwarf king Laurin, annoyed at not being invited by the king on the Etsch to his daughter Similde's wedding, resorted to a ruse. Hidden by his invisibility cap, Laurin secretly snuck among the guests and fell hopelessly in love with the king's daughter. He abducted her and fled to the Rosengarten – the "Gartl," which lies between the Rosengartenspitze, the Laurinswand, and the Vajolet Towers. But the pursuers, led by the hero Dietrich von Bern, were already hot on his heels. Because the roses in his garden moved where Laurin was hiding, the warriors were able to find and overpower him despite the invisibility cap. Thereupon Laurin cursed the Rosengarten: neither by day nor by night should a human eye ever see it again. But he forgot the twilight. And so today we can still see the magnificently blooming rock roses of the summit. This mysterious alpenglow is one of the main attractions of your holiday in Tiers am Rosengarten. It is due to the mineralogical composition of the Dolomites and colours the rock faces in a piercingly glowing red, a fascinating colour scale ranging from orange to deep violet.
